FORMER KOPPERS CLAIRTON PLANT

The 17-acre former Koppers Inc. Clairton Plant made chemicals used in aluminum manufacturing from waste products from the steel industry, but closed in 2016 due to the aluminum industry cutting production in the U.S.

THE PROJECT:

Koppers transferred all assets of the Clairton facility to State Street a subsidiary of CLP in October of 2018 in exchange for  assuming full responsibility and liabilities for facility decommissioning, demolition and site restoration.

OUR ROLE:

  • Demolishing and abating existing plant complete in 2019.

  • Decommissioning of all large storage tanks complete in 2020.

  • Groundwater monitoring and reporting until property was sold in 2021.

  • Property sold to US Steel in March of 2021
